Many of us would have come across the word “Multitenant Architecture” in Oracle world. By the time, we read this, some of us feel boring to go in detail and to know about the architecture. If you among the one, now you are here at right place.
Let me try to explain multitenant in simple terms, so that at the end of this blog, you will know about this buzzing word “Multitenant“.
Since Oracle Database 12c, Multitenant architecture is supported. This new architecture will have many “Sub databases” in single “Super database“. This super database is officially termed as “CDB” (Container Database) and sub databases is officially termed as “PDB” (Pluggable Database).
I believe now it is easy to understand and you are now well versed in the terms CDB and PDB. As the name indicates, super database (CDB) can hold or contain many databases (PDB) and hence the term “Container Database”(CDB). An single PDB can be cloned, plugged, unplugged or removed in same CDB or another CDB and hence the term “Pluggable Database”.
Now, you may ask how many PDB a single CDB can hold. A CDB can hold maximum of 252 PDBs. PDB’s are useful for the applications which uses only single schemas or few schemas.
Let me cover more about this CDB and PDB in next post.
